Chewy's story is one of betrayal, human failure, but also of a dog's resilience. Found as a stray in August 2024 wearing a collar, it's clear Chewy once belonged to someone. However, he was never reclaimed from the shelter, so he was adopted out to a new family. Nine months later, Chewy was once again picked up as a stray, and his body told a story of physical neglect. While adopted out as a totally healthy dog, this time around he was found dragging his legs behind him, paralyzed. Despite the obvious hardships he's endured, Chewy is a sweet, gentle, friendly, and resilient boy.
Chewy's x-rays show compression on several vertebrae, consistent with IVDD. He's able to stand on his own when put into position and moved his legs while in his wheelchair. We are so hopeful that with physical therapy and some TLC, Chewy will regain some of his mobility. In the meantime, he loves his wheels and even goes for long walks every day in them!
Chewy is around 3 years old and weighs 20 lbs. Our best guess is that he's some kind of affenpinscher/shih tzu mix, but we cannot know for sure! What we do know is that Chewy is an incredibly friendly and happy dog who loves makes friends with everyone he meets. He shares his foster home with another small dog, a cat, and a small child, and he does amazing with them all. Chewy has such an easy-going personality and is just happy to go with the flow!
Chewy will begin physical therapy with our vet on June 3 and will not be ready to join hisforever home until after he finishes all his sessions. We can accept applications now though!
