In May one of our partner shelters had several Huskies. Knowing we couldn't help them all, we focused on the couple that needed us the most. That means those who would either be overlooked by the average Adopter walking through the shelter or who had been failed too many times.
Dreyer was the first on the list. Dreyer had been seen wandering stray for quite a while. He was finally contained and animal control picked him up and brought him to the shelter. He's estimated to be 9-10 years old.
When we met Dreyer he came to the front of his kennel for pets, but then laid down and wouldn't get back up. He laid in the back portion of his kennel, seemingly overwhelmed by the environment.
Was he a smart rescue? Not at all. With so many dogs in our care needing rehabilitation, it wasn't smart to pull another dog who will likely not be adopted. But, we just couldn't leave him there.
And so Dreyer will likely live out his remaining days in our care. At first he went through the defeated phase where he walked around with his head hung low. His skin was an icky mess under all that hair and we've made good progress getting him healthy again. We can't wait for him to realize he's safe and loved and can just be a Husky! He likes other dogs, but not the 'in-your-face' type. He'd prefer to be an only dog or just coexist with others. Dreyer is an independent guy who likes to do things on his terms. He's not a fan of the leash and would prefer to have a fenced yard to explore. But we're sharing Dreyer for adoption because, well, stranger things have happened. Sometimes there's a special person out there who looks to adopt those senior dogs to let them live out the rest of their days in a loving home. We hope you're that person and we hope you chose Dreyer!
