Portia is an 8-year-old Terrier mix who came to us from a shelter as a stray. Her coat is
shiny black with some gold and white highlights around her face. She has been given a
short haircut prior to her arrival at the rescue but it seems that it might grow in and
require grooming in the future. She is a spayed female who is up to date on vaccines
and has a clean bill of health. She currently weighs about 20 pounds and is on a weight
loss journey. Portia loves to walk and has lots of pep in her step, so it won’t be long til
she’s in perfect shape. She’s eating senior kibble with a bit of wet food twice a day. She
is good with other dogs and respectful with cats. She does well with meeting other
people and would be fine with children over 10. She does not have any guarding issues
around food or toys and has shown no aggression at all to people or animals. She is
learning not to bark along the fence with our neighbour dogs but easily corrects. She is
housetrained and will go out in the backyard, on a pee pad by the door or on leash. She
had a long journey in a crate on her way to her foster home with no issues but is not
currently using a crate in the foster home. She can be left for several hours alone in the
home with no barking or other problems. She walks well on the leash and is happy to go
for walks a couple of times a day. She can go up and down stairs easily. She knows “sit”
and will also “sit pretty” for a treat. She likes being close to people and enjoys sitting on
the chair with her foster mom. She sleeps on the people bed at night and on the floor
during the day. She needs human assistance to get up on furniture. Portia is a quiet but
confident dog who would do well in an apartment or house. She would be fine to live
with another dog, compatible cat or as the only pet. Portia has lots of cuddles to give
and will be a loving companion to her new family.
