Meet Purdue! Purdue is a soulful, loyal girl who bonds deeply with her person. This sweet girl is not only smart but also well-mannered — she knows how to sit, lie down, and can shake with both paws. Take a look at this video of Purdue shaking hands and then gently taking her reward treat. She’s fully potty trained, has no issues with her kennel, and is an absolute joy to have around. Purdue is curious about cats and may try to playfully chase them, but she means no harm. In fact, when the cats show they’re not interested, she respectfully leaves them be. Confident, non-reactive cats are no problem for her.
Purdue is a total cuddlebug and has earned the title of "velcro dog" from my son — she loves being as close as possible to her people at all times! Whether it’s snuggling on the couch or snoozing beside you while you eat dinner, she simply wants to be near. She’s done well with kids 7+, though she can be a bit too enthusiastic for little ones! She’s also a bit of a treat connoisseur: she’ll pass on plain biscuits but gets excited for meaty treats and is super food motivated.
When meeting new folks especially men, she’s a bit nervous, so slow introductions to new people is best. Purdue attended an oil change with us and greeted men and women politely with no bad behavior. She minded her manners and hung out in the waiting area with 2 of my kids and I. In fact, check out these videos of her waiting patiently: video 1 video 2 video 3.
Purdue is best suited for an experienced dog owner and as an only dog or with a calm, respectful dog companion. She’s a loving companion who absolutely adores people and thrives with clear boundaries and consistent guidance. While she is still learning to be comfortable with the gentle leader, with continued training and patience, she is making progress. Purdue does get excited when she sees other dogs and may bark or pull to greet them, but this is an area that’s improving with ongoing work. With her affectionate nature and a dedicated owner, she has great potential to continue blossoming.
Purdue is crate-trained (though not a huge fan) and fully potty-trained. The gentle leader has been a game changer for her, helping her feel secure on walks. She’s still perfecting her manners but is making great progress. With time and trust, her love is pure and unmatched — she just needs her person to believe in her as much as she believes in them! Purdue needs a confident strong leader and boundaries and her loyalty and love will be unmatched.
Slow introductions and a patient, experienced home will help her continue to blossom. Sweet, affectionate, and full of charm, Purdue is ready to find a family to love!
Purdue is from a local impound. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.
To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page.
If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.
